Route 66 doesn’t exist and hasn’t for 30 years. I didn’t know this until a couple of months ago and lots of people, I have found, still don’t. There is a plaque in downtown Albuquerque on a wall that quotes a woman who said something akin to: “Thank goodness that godforsaken road no longer runs through here - look how much easier it is to pop out in the car for groceries now.” I find it strange that this earned a plaque as the Route 66 Bar & Grille, Route 66 Hotel, Route 66 Barber Shop, Route 66 Bail Bond Co and others would suggest she was alone in her view.
